2012

Renfrew County High School Scholarship

The Chalk River Branch of the CNS is offering three scholarships ($1,000, $600 and $400) to Grade 12 students in Renfrew County, who will be entering post-secondary education in the fall of 2011. This scholarship requires an original 500 to 1000 word essay on one of the following two topics:

The essay must be submitted as a typed e-document (Microsoft Word, Open Office, or PDF) and must cite and include appropriate references and a bibliography (not to be included in word count).  The use of tables, figures, pictures and other illustrations to enhance the essay are encouraged, but are not required.

The essay must be original and must demonstrate critical thinking and interpretation by the student.  Teachers of English, French, Science, or Technology are encouraged to mentor, guide and review the student’s work.

The essay shall be submitted as an attachment via email with the subject line: “CNS CRB Essay 2012”. There shall be no information identifying the student or school in the Essay File.  In the body of the email the author shall state the writer’s name, mailing address, postal code, phone number, name of high school and mentoring teacher. The student shall also provide information on their expected date of graduation, and the post-secondary institutions to which they are applying for the Fall of 2012.

A committee of CNS-CRB members will judge the essays for originality, content, clarity, logical reasoning, and critical thinking. Essays are considered only if they fulfill all the criteria stated above. The committee reserves the right to disqualify essays that are found to contain plagiarism and/or lack ingenuity/originality. The graduation status of scholarship winners will be confirmed prior to making the award.

 

7th Annual CNS President’s Dinner Meeting

On February 21st, the Chalk River branch hosted its 7th annual CNS president dinner meeting with Frank Doyle.  His career in the CANDU nuclear industry includes development, engineering, licensing and project management with senior management positions at Atomic Energy of Canada, Ontario Power Generation and CANDU Owners’ Group (COG). 
In his presentation, Mr. Doyle discussed his perspective on the roles of the CNS, COG and Chalk River Laboratories, and how they are aligning their strategic directions to better support the future of nuclear in Canada.

2011

American Nuclear Society Winter Meeting

On Tuesday, November 1, 2011, several CNS members atttended the American Nuclear Society (ANS) Winter Meeting at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, in Washington, D.C..  The ANS held an Awards Luncheon to recognize the achievements of various individuals, including Theodore (Ted) Rockwell, who received the W.B. Lewis Award.  Ted Rockwell has had a distinguished career, including extensive work on the U.S. nuclear submarine program during the 1950’s, under the direction of Admiral Hyman Rickover.

A nuclear safety assessment of the Fukushima Dai‐ichi events, Aug 25

Organized by the Chalk River Branch of the Canadian Nuclear Society and Professional Engineers Ontario, Algonquin Chapter.

A nuclear safety assessment of the Fukushima Dai‐ichi events presented by Dr. John C. Luxat based upon best available information from multiple sources and independent analysis of accident progression. The presentation covers the accident progression in the four units, reactor core heat up, core damage estimation and hydrogen generation, features of the explosions and damage to the units, fission product release and dispersion, and radiological consequences.

Dr. John C. Luxat is Professor in the Department of Engineering Physics and holds the NSERC/UNENE Industrial Research Chair in Nuclear Safety Analysis at McMaster University. He currently has a very active research program at McMaster, studying many aspects of the safety of current and future reactors and nuclear fuel cycles.

Renfrew County Science Fair (Apr 9)

Approximately 50 projects were reviewed by CNS-CRB representatives and the following 3 projects were selected for the CNS-CRB Award for Science and Innovation.

•Homemade Solar Air Furnace
•Maximizing Wind Turbine Blade Efficiency


CNS Annual President’s Dinner Meeting (Feb 21) 

On February 21st, the Chalk River branch hosted a dinner meeting with the CNS president Dr. Adriaan Buijs a professor at McMaster University.  Dr Buijs gave a presentation on “Nuclear Energy in the Education of Sustainable Engineering Practices”.

 


2009-2010

ZED-2 50th Anniversary Celebration

On November 29 2010, the Chalk River branch held a dinner in honour of the 50th anniversary of the ZED-2 research reactor. Retired physicist Rick Jones gave a talk "A History of ZED-2".

CNS Graduation Awards in Renfrew County High Schools

The CNS Chalk River Branch awards prizes, in Renfrew County High Schools, to the top two highest ranking students in combined grades in 4U Physics and 4U Calculus and 4U Chemistry, with each course being given equal weighting. The recipients will attend university the following Autumn.
