2011/2012 Speaker’s Program:
Talk by A. Eyre and D. Lawson on CSSE's paper "Energy Compass"
Part 1: Energy Compass Logic
Arnold Eyre’s primary role as lead co-author of The Canadian Society for Senior Engineers’ (The CSSE’s) paper “Energy Compass” was to design the means-to-an-end logical construct by which 50-or-so CSSE members evaluated, then ranked, the 26 “prime Canadian energy alternatives”. His secondary role was to manage the evaluation process to ensure objectivity and mathematical correctness. His talk will reveal how and why the use of indigenous nuclear energy trumped the other 25 primary energy alternatives by a large margin.
Part 2: Taking Part in the Energy Compass Exercise
Don Lawson will summarize his experience participating in the creation of the Energy Compass paper. He will review the issues in energy decision making in Canada with a surplus of options and different responsibilities between Federal and Provincial Governments and the Industry. A quick review of the energy decision history of other countries with particular emphasis on the nuclear role will be followed by a personal view of the short and longer term nuclear decisions needed in Canada.
