    Background

    Top of Page

A greater use of nuclear energy will be required to achieve sustainable emissions-free energy production and energy use while economically meeting the requirements of security of supply (energy independence) and growing demand.  Nuclear energy will continue to make a substantial contribution to meet the world’s energy needs based on the sound foundation of existing reactor technology, infrastructure and resources (natural resources and human capital).  To ensure that nuclear energy can contribute its full potential, reactor and related nuclear technologies, in particular nuclear fuel cycles, must continue to evolve.  Heavy Water Reactor (HWR) technology is uniquely suited to respond to the future needs because of its inherent technical characteristics and associated fuel cycle flexibility.  With the looming renaissance of nuclear power, major plans for new builds have been established or considered in many countries. In cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS) is organizing the International Conference on the future of HWR (HWR-Future).  This conference is aimed at providing a forum for discussion of advancements and issues, sharing information and technology transfer, and establishing future collaborations on reactor design, fuel design, material and chemistry, thermal-hydraulics and safety, and operating experience for HWRs.  The official language of the symposium is English.
