Iter is a huge international research and development centre that will pave the way to a new, cleaner and sustainable energy source for the planet. Iter Canada is a non-profit organization, established by a diverse group of people and organizations that are working to bring the project to Canada.
Iter Canada is proposing to locate the project in Clarington, Ontario - a site which is globally acknowledged as the best in the world for such a facility. The Iter project will bring tremendous economic, environmental and technological advantages to Canada over the next 20 years. Competitors to host the project include Japan and France, but international interest in and support for Canada's bid to host are strong. Canada is expected to submit a formal offer to host Iter in November, followed by negotiations with Japan, Europe and Russia soon afterwards. The final decision is expected in 2002 with construction beginning as early as 2003. The proposed Canadian site has a number of competitive advantages, including the world's only source of available tritium for the Iter research and development program. A site in Canada offers the lowest siting costs to the Iter Parties and by offering the lowest global costs, Canada strengthens political support for fusion energy as a potential long-term cleaner energy source for the future.
As Chairman and CEO of ITER Canada, Peter Barnard is responsible for the overall direction and leadership of the ITER Canada organization. Peter assumed his leadership role with ITER Canada in 1997.
Peter has extensive technical and managerial experience, particularly in energy-related organizations. Specifically, he served as Chairman of Ontario Hydro Technologies between 1994 - 1997. Early in his career, Peter founded his own management consulting firm and grew it over almost 20 years into a firm with 25 staff and global clients.
A professional engineer, Peter holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Sciences from Cambridge University and is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School.
Peter is married with two adult sons and is active in tennis, golf, squash and skiing.
