Conference Background

The peaceful application of nuclear science and technology has contributed clean, safe and resilient energy to mitigate climate change challenges; diagnostic and therapy tools that improve individual health; and means that enhance security of the global community.

It is anticipated that enhancement of these benefits through research and development will continue well into the 21st century, accompanied by an increase in public confidence and acceptance of nuclear science and technology.

The Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS) will host its 38th Annual Conference at the Sheraton Cavalier Saskatoon Hotel in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, 2018 June 3-6. This conference provides a forum for communication of new ideas, information exchange of progress and achievements, and a forum to discuss energy‐related issues in general. Technical topics of interest are listed on the following page. The CNS 38th Annual Conference will feature:

  • Plenary sessions with invited speakers to address such topics as large scale refurbishment projects, options for future new-build, etc.
  • Technical sessions with subject‐matter experts from utilities, suppliers, the regulator, academia, federal laboratories and agencies to present the latest advancements in nuclear science and technology.
  • An embedded topical meeting on Small Modular Reactors (SMR) with focused plenary and technical sessions dealing with the potential of and challenges to licensing and deployment of SMR in Canada.
  • Exhibits with industrial leaders showcasing their latest nuclear products and technology.
  • A Student Conference with student posters
  • Social events (such as opening reception, lunches, conferen cebanquet , wine-&-cheese reception , coffee breaks and conference banquet) that facilitate discussions and networking on subjects of common interests.

Travel and accommodation subsidies from the CNS:

  • The CNS will be giving students a subsidy to help cover the cost of the conference
  • This will be given to ONE student per successful submission to the student conference (i.e. students who submit in the technical program only do not qualify)

  • Travel:
    • The amount given will be based on the university the student travels from
    • Please look back very soon for the amounts
  • Accommodation:
    • The CNS will pay for accommodations at the Sheraton Cavalier Hotel. Booking the room is your responsibility, so please read the instructions carefully to be sure that you get a room and so that you are sure you will receive reimbursement.
      • Each student will be reimbursed for half the cost of a two-bed room for 3 nights (the total cost is $613.95 and each student will pay and be reimbursed for $306.98)
      • Students will be mailed (pay attention, as this is different from last year) a reimbursement cheque when they have shown their receipt of proof of purchase.
      • You can either choose your own roommate or ask to be paired with one, so let us know as soon as possible! (cnsstudentconference@cns-snc.ca)
      • PLEASE REMEMBER: When you book a hotel room, your credit card is NOT charged. One of you needs to book the room, but both of you will pay half the cost when you check out at the end of the conference!
  • IMPORTANT: registration in the conference is mandatory, but the registration fee is not covered by the CNS

CNS promotes the exchange of information on all aspects of nuclear science & technology, and its applications.  With advancements in fields such as nuclear power generation, fuel production and uranium mining & refining, as well as practical applications for monitoring and mitigating climate change, we remain committed to pursuing and investing in these global health and security benefits.

It is our hope that with your contribution we will be able to bring forth not only an enhancement of these tremendous benefits through avid research and development, but also an open discussion about what the future holds for the nuclear industry.
